VOLUME 1 | ISSUE 16 | Nashville Pussy & Supersuckers Live At Starlight

by: Andrea Kowk

On April 24th be prepared to rock out in the mosh pit, as the Supersuckers and Nashville Pussy’s and special guest Kitchener’s Saigon Hookers will be tearing it up at the Starlight in uptown Waterloo.

The night kicks off with Nashville Pussy, a band straight out of Texas and has been bringing their raw and unadulterated sound to audiences for over a decade.  The band is led by lead singer Blaine Cartwright, his wife and guitarist Ruyter Suys, bassist Karen Cuda and on the drums Jeremy Thompson. For the most part their songs are fun and energetic although they sometimes dip into more serious songs like Late Great USA, a political song that shows some of the anger the U.S has about certain grievances in the country.

The band has been touring the North America for the better part of a year to promote their latest rock release From Hell To Texas. This album showed the band hone their most impressive recording to date with songs like, “Why Why Why”, “Drunk Driving Man”, “I’m So High” featuring Danko Jones and the albums title track “From Hell to Texas”. Their classic rock style and good-time attitude is expected to open the night in true rock fashion.

Following Nashville Pussy the stage will then be set for Tuscan Arizona’s Supersuckers. Supersuckers started in 1988 when five friends decided to start a band. The band then called the Black Supersuckers changed some members and dropped the Black, quickly found some success in their town and decided to leave and try it out in other places. They have since toured all over the world and even created their own record label. They played Woodstock 2000, Reading/Leeds festivals, recorded with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Steve Earle, Kelly Deal of the Breeders and Willie Nelson. They also backed Willie Nelson when he performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The Supersuckers will be spending 2012 touring and then heading into a studio to put together a new album. Their last album was 2008’s Get It Together, and was their first full-length album since 2003. The album features songs like, “What It Takes”, “Paid”, “She Is Leaving” and “When I Go, I’m Gone”.

The show will also feature special guests Saigon Hookers from right here in Kitchener. The Saigon Hookers began in 2005 and includes Tommy Smokes (lead guitar/vox), Lee Brook (bass/vox), Ron Cybulskie (guitar/vox) and Tommy Guns (drums). They have honed their craft through relentless touring and endless writing as they try to bring the aggressive loud dueling guitars that are timeless and classic with songs like “Let It Slide”, “King of Regret”, “It’s Alright” and “Hopeless Case Of A Kid In Denial”.

The night is expected to be a mosh-smashing night as these three bands duel it out guitar-style at the Starlight, April 24, before continuing their across Canada tour.
